These crochet Christmas baby pants have a striped top, ribbed cuffs and a bobble Christmas tree on each leg, with a cord to tie at the waist. They come in 7 sizes, from preemie to 24 months, and make a sweet first Christmas outfit.

Each leg is worked in the round from the bottom up, then the legs are joined and the top is worked in one piece, so there are no side seams to sew. This free pattern has every round for every size, with step photos. Prefer paper? Download the free printable PDF at the end.

Materials

  • DK, 8 ply or light worsted yarn (weight 3), in 100 g balls of about 230 m (251 yd): 1 ball each of silver, white, green and red. The newborn size used 82 g in all.
  • A 4.0 mm crochet hook, and a 5.0 mm hook for the starting chain only
  • Stitch markers, a tape measure, a yarn needle and scissors

Skill level and sizes

This is an intermediate pattern. You need half double crochet, front and back post stitches for the ribbing, bobbles, and color changes for the tree. The photos show each new step.

  • Back post double crochet (bpdc): yarn over, insert the hook from the back around the post of the stitch instead of into the top, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook), then yarn over and pull through 2 loops twice.
  • Front post double crochet (fpdc): the same, but insert the hook from the front around the post of the stitch.
  • Bobble: make 5 dc in the same stitch. Take the hook out of the loop, insert it through the top of the first dc, put the loop back on the hook and pull it through the first dc to close the bobble. Ch 1 and pull tight to secure it (the securing chain).

Pattern

Numbers are given for the 7 sizes as preemie (newborn, 0 to 3, 3 to 6, 6 to 12, 12 to 18, 18 to 24 months). Where there is only one number, it is for all sizes. The rounds are joined and turned, so right side and wrong side rounds take turns. Change color on the last loops of the stitch before the new color.

Right leg

Cuff, in silver:

  1. Round 1 (RS)With the 5.0 mm hook, ch 24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 34) loosely and ss to the 1st chain to make a ring, without twisting the chain. Change to the 4.0 mm hook. Ch 1, 1 dc in each chain to the end, ss to the 1st dc to join. Do not turn. (24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 34))
  2. Round 2 (RS)Ch 2, turn the work upside down so the WS faces you and ss into the bottom of the 1st dc. Turn back so the RS faces you: you now work along the bottom of round 1, with the ch 2 behind on the WS. Ch 1, *1 fpdc, 1 bpdc*, repeat from * to * to the end, ss to the 1st fpdc to join, turn. (24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 34))
  3. Rounds 3 and 4Ch 1, *1 fpdc, 1 bpdc*, repeat from * to * to the end, ss to the 1st fpdc to join, turn. On the last bpdc of round 4, change to white on the last 2 loops. (24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 34))

The start of round 2 gives a neater bottom edge. You can skip it and simply work rounds of fpdc and bpdc.

  2. Ss back along the chain to the beginning and fasten off.
  3. Thread the cord through the waistband.
  4. With green, make a bobble at each end of the cord, and use the green tails to sew each bobble down so it sits neatly.

Tips for perfect pants

  • Chain loosely for the cuff, or use the 5.0 mm hook for the chain only, so the cuff stretches over the foot.
  • Leave your stitch markers in until the end: they make the counting much easier.
  • Carry the white yarn inside the green and silver stitches, so there are no loose strands behind the tree.
  • The legs and the top are easy to make longer or shorter: add or leave out plain white rounds.

Questions

Is this pattern good for beginners?

It is an intermediate pattern. You need half double crochet, post stitches for the ribbing, bobbles and color changes for the tree. The photos show each new step.

How do I measure for baby pants?

Measure around the baby's hips at the widest part and compare it with the hip measurement in the chart, which is the size of the finished pants. For the leg, measure from the crotch to the ankle.

Which size should I make?

Choose by the hip measurement in the chart. Ages are only a guide, as all babies are different, and you can adjust the leg and top length to fit.

Can I make them without the Christmas tree?

Yes. Work plain white hdc rounds instead of the tree rounds. The stitch counts stay the same.

What yarn do I need?

DK, 8 ply or light worsted yarn (weight 3): one 100 g ball each of silver, white, green and red. The newborn size used 82 g in all.

How do you wash crochet baby clothes?

Follow the care label of your yarn, and dry the pants flat so they keep their shape.

Can I sell the pants I make?

Yes. You are welcome to sell the finished pants you make from this pattern, and a credit to Crochet Simplified with a link to crochetsimplified.com is appreciated. Please do not share, copy or sell the pattern itself.

Is there a printable version?

Yes. The free PDF has the whole pattern for all 7 sizes with the step photos. Download it, open it on your phone or print the pages you need.
