The Pine Cone Baby is a little woodland crochet doll about 14 cm (5.5 in) tall: a sleepy face under a pine cone cap with a stalk and a leaf, a ruffled collar, and a body full of bobble stitch scales. Made as a gentle baby toy or as autumn decor, it is a lovely gift for anyone who loves the forest.

This free amigurumi doll pattern has every round written out below, a step by step guide to the bobble stitch and photos of every piece and of the assembly. Prefer paper? Download the free printable PDF at the end.

Materials

  • Mercerized cotton in three colors (shown in n° 404, 507 and 387): a light skin tone for the head (25 g), brown for the pine cone body, cap and stalk (50 g) and green for the leaf and collar (25 g)
  • Golden thread for the leaf veins, and dark yarn to embroider the face
  • A 2.5 mm crochet hook
  • Fiberfill stuffing, scissors, a yarn needle and stitch markers
  • Pink blush for the cheeks (optional)

Skill level and size

This is an intermediate pattern. Everything is worked in continuous rounds of single crochet, with bobble stitch rounds for the texture, and the collar is three short rows.

The finished doll is about 14 cm (5.5 in) tall. The size changes if you use a different yarn or hook.

How to make the bobble stitch

  1. Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops only, like the start of a double crochet. You have 2 loops on the hook.
  2. Yarn over, insert the hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops. You have 3 loops on the hook.
  3. Repeat step 2 to have 4 loops on the hook.
  4. Repeat step 2 again to have 5 loops on the hook.
  5. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops at once.
  6. Single crochet in the next stitch. Repeat the number of times given in the round.

For more relief, repeat step 2 five times instead of four, so you have 6 loops on the hook before you pull through.

Pattern

Work each part in continuous rounds, without joining with a slip stitch, unless the pattern says otherwise. Use a stitch marker at the start of each round. The number in brackets at the end of each round is your stitch count.

Tips for a perfect pine cone baby

  • Use a stitch marker every round: the bobble rounds are easy to miscount.
  • Keep your bobbles the same size by pulling each loop to the same height.
  • Stuff the head and body firmly so the doll stands upright.
  • Embroider the face before you attach the collar, so it is easy to reach.

Questions

Is this doll pattern good for beginners?

It is an intermediate pattern. If you are comfortable with single crochet in the round and can learn the bobble stitch from the steps above, you can make it.

How big is the pine cone baby?

About 14 cm (5.5 in) tall with mercerized cotton and a 2.5 mm hook.

Is it safe as a baby toy?

The face is embroidered, with no safety eyes or beads, which makes it a good choice for a little one. Sew every piece on firmly and check the seams before you give it.
