Materials

  • Fingering weight 100% cotton yarn (super fine, weight 1), about 96 to 142 m (105 to 155 yd) in total. The original is an 8/4 cotton with 170 m (186 yd) in 50 g. Super fine organic cotton or mercerized cotton also work.
  • Two colors: a main color for the top and the straps (aqua in the photos) and white for the soles, the tongue and the edging
  • A 1.75 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch markers, a measuring tape, scissors and a tapestry needle
  • Hook and loop tape: 6 mm (0.24 in) dots or regular tape
  • Textile glue
  • Baby shoe forms (optional, but very helpful)
Aqua and white cotton yarn, a crochet hook, stitch markers, scissors, a ruler, hook and loop tape and a clear shoe form
Everything you need for one pair.

Baby shoe forms make these sneakers much easier. You can try them on as you crochet, check the size, and dry the finished sneakers on the forms after washing so they keep their shape.

Skill level and sizes

This is an intermediate pattern. You work around a foundation chain, join two soles for a firm base and shape the toe with decreases, so count your stitches at the end of every round.

Choose the size by the baby's inner foot length. If you cannot measure, use the ages in the chart: they are averages, and every baby is different.

Pattern

The number in brackets is the stitch count at the end of the round. The chain at the start of each round (ch 1 or ch 2) counts as the first stitch, and the first stitch of the round goes into the same stitch the chain comes from.

In the photos the soles, sides, tongue and edging are white and the top and straps are aqua. The slip stitches that join the soles and the slip stitch round in step 3 are in the main color, which gives the thin aqua lines around the sole.

Step 1: Sole (make 4)

You need 2 soles for each sneaker. You work around both sides of the foundation chain, and later join the soles together for a firm, reinforced base. Place a marker at the start of the round.

With white yarn, work slip stitches along the top edge of the sneakers and the straps. Weave in all the ends. Your baby sneakers are finished. Well done!

Tips for perfect sneakers

  • Make all 4 soles first and check their length against the chart before you go on.
  • Place a marker at the start of each round and count your stitches: the toe shaping depends on it.
  • Try the sneaker on a shoe form as you work the top, to check the fit.
  • Let the glue dry fully before you close the straps for the first time.

Questions

How do I choose the right size?

Measure the baby's inner foot length from heel to toe and pick that size in the chart. If you cannot measure, use the ages in the chart: they are averages, and every baby is different. The last column is the length of the finished sole.

What yarn is best for baby shoes?

Soft 100% cotton in fingering weight. It holds the sneaker shape and is easy to wash. Super fine organic cotton or mercerized cotton also work.

Is this pattern good for beginners?

It is an intermediate pattern. If you know single, half double and double crochet and can work around a chain, the step photos will guide you through the rest.

How do I wash the sneakers?

Wash them gently as your yarn label says, then dry them on baby shoe forms so they keep their shape.

Can I sell the sneakers I make?

Yes. You are welcome to sell the finished sneakers you make from this pattern, and a credit to Crochet Simplified with a link to crochetsimplified.com is appreciated. Please do not share, copy or sell the pattern itself.

Is there a printable version?

Yes. The free PDF has the whole pattern for all 4 sizes with the step photos. Download it, open it on your phone or print the pages you need.
